Hypnotherapy for weight management.
Whether you are trying to lose or gain weight there are no quick fixes with lasting results. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy aims to get you using that bit of your brain that generally gets things right in life (the left pre-frontal cortex). When we use this part of the brain we make a proper assessment of the situation. Helping you to change your relationship with food and confidently ask yourself:
Why am I hungry? –
Am I tired?
Do I need a drink of water?
Am I bored or upset?
Or do I actually need to eat?
When we are stressed, anxious or emotional we often refer to previous patterns of behaviour (if what we did yesterday helped us to survive we do it again). Solution Focused Hypnotherapy offers a positive intervention from this process. Clients can often find that the experience benefits them in other areas of their lives.
Our bodies are just that ‘ours’ and so it’s important to listen to them. This also means that client participation is essential and that no guarantees can be given. My approach uses Hypnotherapy as well as elements of CBT, NLP and an understanding of how the brain works to help you build confidence in you own internal voice and help you focus on your positive future.
Here are some helpful personal tips for changing your relationship with food:
- Stop jumping from diet to diet! Diets for non-medical reasons can often lead to weight gain in the long term. – http://newsroom.ucla.edu/releases/Dieting-Does-Not-Work-UCLA-Researchers-7832?RelNum=7832
- Be happy with your body now! Strive to be healthy and focus on what you want to be able to do with your leaner, healthier body.
- Restricting food can often build up our cravings! Try instead making small healthy additions with nutritious foods or exercise that you find fun.
- Focus on how you will feel after you’ve eaten! Will you feel stronger, more energised or healthier?
- If you eat it then enjoy it! If you ‘have to have that treat’ then make sure you savour it.

N.B. I cannot supply diet plans or diagnose medical issues. You should always seek advice from your doctor if your weight has seen a dramatic increase/decrease or when choosing a complementary or alternative therapy.
What to look for in a Hypnotherapist.
Always ensure that you do thorough research of both the hypnotherapist and his or her credentials before proceeding with treatment.
Be aware of bold claims.
Whilst the Advertising Standards Authority have now updated their codes to cover websites there are still some therapists making ‘bold’ claims and selling the kind of ‘snake oil’ remedies reminiscent of the Wild West. It should be made clear that success is not guaranteed and full client commitment, such as listening to the relaxation/support CDs, is required for the sessions to be worthwhile. No magic pills are available and this means client participation is a necessary requirement. I offer a half price initial consultation enabling a thorough explanation of all aspects of therapy.
Ensure an eclectic approach.
When choosing a hypnotherapist it’s often best to ensure that they are eclectic in their approach to therapy. As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist (SFH) I use elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the latest developments within Neuroscience, along with Trance to offer a positive intervention and ensure the right environment to tackle your presenting problem.
Make sure your hypnotherapist is insured and part of a society or association.
Make sure that your hypnotherapist is part of a larger governing body. Whilst there is no current legal obligation on the part of the hypnotherapist there are various voluntary organisations that both ensure quality and give the therapist a good support structure. Insurance should also be current and specific to therapy work. I was trained by the renowned Clifton Practice where I gained my Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH), I am currently a member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists (AfSFH) – This ensures that I adhere to their ‘code of conduct’ and attend regular supervision and continuing professional development. I am also fully insured by ‘Holistic Insurance’ and have a current and full DBS Certificate for working with children and vulnerable adults.
