Hypnotherapy for phobias
What is a phobia?
You are not alone! Many of us have elements that make us uncomfortable when we come into contact with them. For some though this can be an incredible source of stress and even lead to us avoiding situations or letting us get on with our normal lives.
I had a course of sessions before my honeymoon to help with an ocean/shark phobia- it really helped as I managed to get in the water further than knee deep! Ben was very approachable and I felt he listened properly to my fears and devised a tailored approach to overcome them. Thank you ?
Phobias generally present themselves in one of two ways.
A simple phobia, where a person suffers a negative reaction when they come into contact with the object of that fear, for example – spiders, flying, dentists or needles.
A complex phobia, where a person suffers continually from that fear and anxiety such as being unable to leave the house.
How does it work?
Simple phobias can usually be dealt with in 4 sessions (including the half price initial consultation). However, some complex phobia work may be best dealt with via a standard solution focused approach i.e. over a series of sessions. This will be discussed within the initial consultation.
I use an explanation of the science behind phobias, NLP and Trance to positively intervene and move the presenting phobia from the emotional parts of the brain to the narrative regions. Helping to give you control and perspective on what can often be an unnecessary source of stress and worry in our lives.

Treatment of Phobias in Manchester
What to look for in a Hypnotherapist
Always ensure that you do thorough research of both the hypnotherapist and his or her credentials before proceeding with treatment.
Be aware of bold claims.
Whilst the Advertising Standards Authority have now updated their codes to cover websites there are still some therapists making ‘bold’ claims and selling the kind of ‘snake oil’ remedies reminiscent of the Wild West. It should be made clear that success is not guaranteed and full client commitment, such as listening to the relaxation/support CDs, is required for the sessions to be worthwhile. No magic pills are available and this means client participation is a necessary requirement. I offer a half price initial consultation enabling a thorough explanation of all aspects of therapy.
Ensure an eclectic approach.
When choosing a hypnotherapist it’s often best to ensure that they are eclectic in their approach to therapy. As a Solution Focused Hypnotherapist (SFH) I use elements of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), and the latest developments within Neuroscience, along with Trance to offer a positive intervention and ensure the right environment to tackle your presenting problem.
Make sure your hypnotherapist is insured and part of a society or association.
Make sure that your hypnotherapist is part of a larger governing body. Whilst there is no current legal obligation on the part of the hypnotherapist there are various voluntary organisations that both ensure quality and give the therapist a good support structure. Insurance should also be current and specific to therapy work. I was trained by the renowned Clifton Practice where I gained my Diploma in Solution Focused Hypnotherapy (DSFH), I am currently a member of the Association for Solution Focused Hypnotherapists (AfSFH) – This ensures that I adhere to their ‘code of conduct’ and attend regular supervision and continuing professional development. I am also fully insured by ‘Holistic Insurance’ and have a current and full DBS Certificate for working with children and vulnerable adults.
